The stadium’s enormous high definition LED scoreboard sparked the idea of creating a program of video art that would inspire, challenge and excite both sports fans and lovers of contemporary art melbourne arts centre, proscenium is a visual extravaganza, utilising a mixture of bold coloured graphics fused with stopmotion photography. the theme for the work was ‘Hidden Spaces, Secret Places’ . the intent was to create an animation responding to the arts centers collections store as animation space and to also respond to content in the collection. after investigating an overwhelming amount of amazing paper based materials and objects, it was decided that there was to be a focus on the pre-production elements by the late Angus Winneke, a prolific production designer working mainly for the tivoli theatre in melbourne during the mid 1900’s. The result is a collage of Mr Winneke’s concept work, presenting elements of his scenes in a visual musical sequence for the screen. cause and effect relationship. each entity has its own colour, form and movement, which work in unison with the soundtrack. different forces such as gravity, wind and turbulence affect the shapes at selected moments within the sound. this creates precipitation by altering each form, or by altering the position of the camera. the shapes each have a beginning and an end, the death of one shape influences the birth of the next, the result is a string of mini big-bangs. the piece investigates cycles of change and the possibilities found in the metamorphosis between shapes. 'press +' uses a combination of analogue and digital techniques. the shapes were improvised, utilising a matrix of points and lines. twelve shapes were selected and linked seamlessly in 3d software . they were then animated in synchronisation with the soundtrack. eventually each frame was printed with an inkjet printer on recycled paper. key moments were then further animated using ink and 01:38:30 +0000 ducroz.com 2252030 inanimate inanimate brings together the work of zoe scoglio and benjamin ducroz, alumni of the media arts area in the school of art. both artists depart from an animation practice but have wound up in very different places, working across a range of platforms from hybridised performance events to festivals and motion graphics. together their work still shares the foundation of the animation discipline, the bringing to life and anthropomorphising of that which is not alive and not human. for inanimate both artists will combine sculptural and screen elements to complicate the relationship between screen and physical space, the human and the non-human, the banal and the uncanny. both artists are inspired by naturally occurring forms and for this work have found the point at which they intersect with the pure geometric structures rendered in the glassy non-space of 3d animation. their respective practices choreograph new relationships between inanimate objects and the viewer to find means to image their ongoing interest in geometric abstraction, fantasy, ritual and metamorphosis. for inanimate they have created a space between theatre and installation to house their own, unique, creation myth. inspired by speculations on the origin of life and evoking the imagery of scientific modelling, the ‘artists impressions’ of contemporary ‘documentary’ television and creation sequences of science fiction, inanimate creates a world at the dawn of time. benjamin and zoe intersect geological and human timescales, to transform the gallery space into a void where the audience orbits the rock to witness the beginnings of life as their small world turns from day to night, darkness to light. -Dominic Redfern excerpt from installation
